The Essential Apps for Travellers in Japan

My 5 must-haves app in Japan

Japan is a stunning country with a rich culture, delicious cuisine, and advanced technology. Whether you’re visiting bustling Tokyo or exploring rural villages, these essential apps will make your trip smoother and more enjoyable. From navigation to translation, I have been to Japan twice and in my experience these apps are useful for any tourist.

🗾GOOGLE MAPS - Navitage the land of the rising sun with ease

This is my number 1 navigation app in Japan (or elsewhere). Navigating the complex transportation system can be overwhelming, especially in big cities like Tokyo or Osaka. In my experience, Google Maps is accurate and reliable for finding train schedules, bus routes, and walking directions.

Guess what ? The app provides real-time updates on subway and train times. You’ll have alternatives if needed. Rest assured, Japanese trains are rarely late.

Sabe’s tip : don’t forget to download the map of your area in case you’re offline and needs directions.

🗣️GOOGLE TRANSLATE / GOOGLE LENS - Never get lost in translation

Language barriers can be a challenge in Japan, especially in rural areas where English is less common. Google Translate or Google Lens are your SOLULU to translate instantly from Japanese to your native language ! These apps are a game changer to translate signs, menus, and conversations on the go. You’ll be able to choose your meal with peace of mind.

💡Sabe’s tips : download the languages you need so that you’ll be able to translate anything even offline.
